Project Cancelled: The Virtual RAF

The RAF we have today is a pale shadow of what was envisaged during the 1950's and 60's. Due to political mismanagement, shortsightedness, petty rivalries and misguided thinking, the British aircraft industry, which, until that point had been the most innovative and radical in the world, was dismantled and cast into the trash-can of history, and with it, the best aerospace designers, many world-class companies, thousands of highly skilled workers, and the RAF.

British Secret Projects: Hypersonics, Ramjets
and Missiles

By Chris Gibson and
Tony Butler

Now Available from Amazon.co.uk.

The book includes the origins of the British colour codes systems used when Cold War deception was at its height, a listing of all the project names coined,a glossary and details of some of the more interesting and even bizarre projects which were considered at this time such as the Green Janet/Blue Bishop portable nuclear power station. This is a fascinating glimpse of some of the leading-edge technology which the British military research establishment was working on at this time and puts these hitherto little-known projects into their historical and political context.

Also includes a selection of my new illustrations, never before seen, e.g. Vulcan B6, HS P1139, Miles M52, P1154, Blue Envoy and many more.
